My priority as your Naturopathic Doctor is to ensure we work together, bringing my knowledge of naturopathic medicine and cancer care to meet you where you’re at.
Meet Dr. Hayhlee Clarence, ND
I knew I would pursue a career as a Naturopathic Doctor but it wasn’t until my family was thrown into the world of cancer diagnoses and treatments that I found exactly where my passion for care was rooted.
After completing a Bachelor of Kinesiology in my home province of BC I moved to Toronto to study Naturopathic Medicine, receiving my Doctor of Naturopathy degree from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine.
Over the course of those four years I spent time learning from Naturopathic Doctors in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Ontario, and South Africa. In my final year as a clinical intern I was one of a select few chosen to work on the Adjunctive Cancer Care (ACC) shift, where I not only had the opportunity to work exclusively with patients affected by cancer, but to shadow Oncologists practicing in Sunnybrook’s Breast Cancer Centre.
As a South African-Canadian, I grew up aware of the havoc HIV and AIDS can wreak on a body, a family and a community. For this reason, in addition to my experience on the ACC shift, I actively pursued placement at the Sherbourne HIV clinic where I was able to gain more in-depth knowledge and experience supporting HIV+ patients. During this time I saw how much of an impact naturopathic medicine can have in supporting immunocompromised patients, enabling them to thrive long-term.
I know how overwhelming it can be to face a cancer diagnosis, from the first time you hear those words life can become a blur of complicated information, doctors’ appointments, and hospitals. I’ve seen how disempowering and disruptive this can be. For this reason my priority as your Naturopathic Doctor is to ensure we work together, bringing my knowledge of naturopathic medicine and cancer care to meet you where you’re at, so together we can create a customized care plan for you.
I am a strong advocate for conventional care, recognizing that naturopathic medicine functions best when it comes alongside medical treatment, but I know this is not always an option. I have seen the confusion and risk to cancer patients when they receive conflicting advice on how best to use complementary medicine, and am driven by a desire to see people empowered by knowledge instead of left feeling uncertain and confused.
Whether you have a strong family history of cancer, previously had cancer, or you are in the midst of an active diagnosis, I follow the best available evidence to formulate a safe care plan unique to each patient’s needs and goals. From preparing to enter treatment, to undergoing conventional care, or moving into recovery, naturopathic medicine can help to support healing, improve quality of life, and optimize the benefit of conventional treatment protocols.
While my practice is focused on supporting patients who have been affected by cancer, my door is open to anyone looking for a Naturopathic Doctor who will see beyond their diagnosis to develop a clear understanding of their goals, and the best way for them to to achieve these.
